No Bad Days. It’s a phrase many fishermen use when describing their visit to Cabo San Lucas.
It’s an anglers’ paradise located at the southernmost tip of Baja California Sur in Mexico. It’s where fishing is the foremost item on agenda and the memories made are countless.
Fishermen from around the world travel to Cabo in pursuit of catching and releasing impressive numbers of striped marlin. What do I mean by “impressive numbers”? Well, 10 to 20 marlin releases in a day is good fishing. If your releases are 20 to 50, that’s great fishing. If those catches are 50 to 100 or more, that’s simply epic fishing.
The peak season starts in October and goes through April, however, you can catch these billfish year-round. Beyond striped marlin there are black marlin and blue marlin, along with an occasional swordfish. There are sailfish, white marlin and even spearfish. “Meat fish” are bountiful as well: Dorado to more than 60 pounds, wahoo, huge yellowfin tuna, snappers and groupers are among the favorites.
When I started fishing in Cabo, I learned from a local fisherman in his panga. A 20-foot exposed hull fishing platform with a 150-horsepower outboard motor, cross planks for seating and the mid-section designed to hold live bait. The technique of catching marlin was very simple. Catch live bait, find the birds, position boat upcurrent and drift into the action with hooked baits.
